VNIX-NOG Member Meeting 2024 in Hue City

On 18 October 2024, the National Internet eXchange Member Meeting (VNIX-NOG 2024), organized by Viet Nam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC), took place in Hue City, Thua Thien Hue Province. The conference focused on technical and technological discussions, sharing network infrastructure operation and management experiences, and strengthening peering and remote peering connections. It also explored the application of emerging technologies to develop advanced management platforms, improving the efficiency of network infrastructure operations, network data utilization, and enhancing the quality and security of Viet Nam’s Internet infrastructure.

VNIX-NOG 2024 gathered more than 150 delegates, including engineers and experts from both Viet Nam and abroad, representing members connected to the National Internet eXchange (VNIX), Internet service providers, content providers, cloud and CDN service companies, as well as organizations managing IP/ASN resources.

The event also welcomed the participation of several international Internet experts from the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC), as well as representatives of leading regional and global Internet Exchange (IX) organizations such as BBIX, JPIX, and DE-CIX, and major international technology enterprises.

Mr. Le Ngoc Duc, Chairman of VNNIC's Governing Board

The Viet Nam National Internet eXchange (VNIX) was established in 2003 by the Viet Nam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) under the Ministry of Information and Communications (Ministry of Science and Technology at the moment), during the early stage of Internet development in Viet Nam.

Since its inception, VNIX has affirmed its critical role as an essential infrastructure component of Viet Nam’s Internet network, making an important contribution to ensuring the security and stability of the national Internet, connecting Internet service providers (ISPs), and promoting the overall growth of the Internet in Viet Nam.

The “Information and Communications Infrastructure Planning for the 2021–2030 Period, with a Vision to 2050,” issued under Decision No. 36/QĐ-TTg by the Prime Minister, defines the development direction for VNIX as follows: “Expand domestic Internet connectivity through direct peering connections, connections to Internet exchange points (IXPs), and to the national Internet eXchange point (VNIX). Expand regional and international Internet connectivity, particularly by developing submarine cable systems, with the goal of making Viet Nam a regional connectivity and data center hub. Transition the entire Vietnamese Internet network to the new generation Internet Protocol (IPv6).”

Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang – Deputy Director General delivered the Opening Speech at VNIX-NOG 2024

Strengthening Peering to Develop the Internet: In the context of the strong development of the Internet, peering connections and Internet traffic exchange (Internet Exchange – IX) through Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) play an increasingly important role. As of today, nearly 1,200 IXPs are operating worldwide, including 178 IXPs in the Asia-Pacific region. The core value of IXPs lies in peering — enhancing peering connections through IXPs helps reduce costs, improve service quality, and make the Internet network flatter and more efficient.

Ensuring Internet and Digital Infrastructure Security for Sustainable Development: Digital infrastructure security needs greater attention. Strengthening connections through VNIX helps develop and enhance the safety of digital infrastructure. The application of Internet resource certification through RPKI (Resource Public Key Infrastructure) ensures the security of Internet routing, while increasing the use of network data and DNS system data for evaluation, monitoring, and maintaining the security of network infrastructure.

Applying Emerging Technologies – AI and Automation – to Improve Network Management Capacity: As network infrastructure continues to evolve, it is essential to research and apply new technologies, engineering solutions, and network management methods, particularly through the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation to enhance operational capacity and efficiency.

Human Resource Development and Connecting Network Engineers and Experts: The VNIX-NOG Conference has successfully brought together network engineers and technical experts. Through the conference sessions and hands-on training workshops, participants have opportunities to develop capabilities in research, application development, and network operation and management, while also collaborating with international expertise to promote the growth of the Internet in Viet Nam.

Key Topics Discussed and Shared by Experts at the Conference:

Experts at the conference discussed and shared insights on various topics, including:

  • Evaluations of IXPs in the region and worldwide and their development trends;

  • Technical and technological solutions for connectivity enhancement through VNIX Points of Presence (PoPs) located in Internet Data Centers (IDCs);

  • Technical solutions to ensure network infrastructure security, such as redundant connectivity, routing security through RPKI, and DDoS attack prevention and mitigation on enterprise networks and VNIX infrastructure;

  • Promoting IPv6 deployment, moving toward IPv6-only networks across Viet Nam’s Internet;

  • Utilizing network and DNS system data to analyze, monitor, and ensure Internet security;

  • Developing and applying new technologies and technical solutions, as well as efficient network infrastructure management procedures, and integrating AI and Automation into network operations to help enterprises and organizations enhance management capacity and better meet the growing demands of Internet users.
